Dark Dining - Be a Light in the Vision Space!

Dark Dining offers a three-course dinner and sensory experiences to enlighten guests on the challenges of the vision impaired. The event is also an opportunity to celebrate a leader in the vision space who has made a lasting impact in the field. This year's honoree will be Dr. Nancy Webb.

Honoree, Dr. Nancy Webb

Nancy Webb was only 12 when she experienced a brief glimpse of her future career. She was helping a 90-year-old visually impaired gentleman in New York City play his beloved Steinway by placing his fingers on the proper keys and playing for him. At his death, she inherited the piano which she still plays to this day. Today, Dr. Webb is among the most compassionate and gifted ophthalmologists in Houston, and based on surveys of her medical peers, has consistently been named one of the best doctors in Houston.

Dr. Webb is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UT-Austin where she joined Delta Gamma, whose mission is helping the blind and visually impaired. She graduated first in her class from Baylor College of Medicine—one of only 8 women of the 168 in the class. She was elected to AOA medical honor society and received the award for best research study as an ophthalmology resident. Dr. Webb completed her residency in Ophthalmology at Baylor, as well as a fellowship in Ophthalmic Pathology and was a full-time faculty member for one year.

In 1980, Dr. Webb joined Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and was named Chief of the Department one year later. She was the first woman to be named a Chief since the clinic was founded in 1949. Dr. Webb has continued to practice at Kelsey for the past 42 years and was named a Fellow of Kelsey-Seybold in 2013, the highest honor bestowed by the clinic, for her service, leadership, loyalty, and dedication. She has chaired the clinic Peer Review Committee for 40 years and is currently Associate Chief of the Department.

For many years, Dr. Webb offered a one-month clinical elective in Ophthalmology for Baylor students where she is a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. She appreciated the opportunity to mentor the students, especially the women, who frequently praised her as a role model.

Dr. Webb has performed thousands of eye surgeries locally and pre-Covid, travelled annually since 1997 with Benevolent Missions International (BMI) to Bolivia, El Salvador, Belize, and Fiji, providing cost-free medical and surgical eye care to the underserved in these communities. The gratitude expressed by those patients is priceless and the impact of BMI’s work is life changing for those served. Dr. Webb has been president of BMI for the past 8 years.

Dr. Webb also enjoys her service to the Lighthouse of Houston which is dedicated to assisting the blind and visually impaired in the community. She served on the board of directors for 20 years, 2 of those years as Board Chair and is currently on the Board of Trustees. She has also served as President of the Houston Ophthalmological Society and the Baylor Ophthalmology Alumni Association.

Dr. Webb has served on the board of the Kelsey-Research Foundation for over 35 years and the Houston Delta Gamma Foundation where she oversees grants awarded to organizations who help the blind and visually impaired. In 2003, she was one of the Women of Vision for the Houston Delta Gamma Foundation which recognize outstanding professional women who have made significant contributions to the Houston community.

In 2018, Dr. Webb was honored by Girlstart as one of the Houston area STEM professionals who exemplify what women in STEM can achieve. She was also honored by Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center with the Community Service Award in 2019.

Dr. Webb has been a member of Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church since 1980, and while on the vestry, the governing body of the church, she cofounded the Way Station to minister to the homeless who reside at Hermann Park near the church.

Dr. Webb credits much of her success to the constant support and encouragement of her husband of more than 50 years, David who is a retired attorney. They are the parents of a son and daughter and 2 granddaughters. Fortunately, they are all in the Houston area, and she enjoys hosting many family get-togethers. She also enjoys travel, walking, her monthly book club, needle point, and playing her Steinway.
