Support Vision with Love Your Eyes, San Antonio, and Celebrate Valentine's Day with PBT!

Love Your Eyes, San Antonio celebrates the vision community in the southwest region and introduces the region to PBT’s mission and services. We look forward to hosting you for an early Valentine's Day party where we will sip cocktails, snack on heavy hors d'oeuvres, stroll the gardens, shop with Kendra Scott, sing with Patsy Torres, and support sight! We will highlight public health researcher, Dr. Amelie Ramirez, who is a leader and visionary in the vision space and has made a lasting impact in the field. Guests will not need actual tickets and your name will be on the list at the door. Dress code business casual. On-site tickets will be available so invite your friends to join you!

Amelie G. Ramirez, DrPH, of UT Health San Antonio, is a health equity pioneer who has achieved local, state, national, presidential, and international recognition for her successes in reducing Latino cancer health disparities and championing system and policy changes that promote health equity for Latinos. As Chair and Full Professor of the Department of Population Health Sciences at UT Health San Antonio, a Hispanic-Serving Institute, Ramirez leads a multidisciplinary team of public health researchers, data scientists, and communication specialists in addressing the cancer experience of Latinos. As leader of community outreach at the NCI-designated Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio, Dr. Ramirez has implemented system changes that have enhanced surveillance of the South Texas cancer burden, improved equity and diversity in cancer clinical trial recruitment, and engaged the community in clinical research and preventive cancer care. Dr. Ramirez also leads a variety of research projects to improve cancer survivorship, cancer screening, smoking cessation, and clinical trial awareness and participation among Latinos. Dr. Ramirez also leads the Salud America! communication program (www.salud-america.org; @SaludAmerica). Salud America! is a national network of over 500,000 community, school, and healthcare leaders who are fueled with content and tools to advocate for equitable changes in policies and systems related to healthcare access, housing, transportation, and social cohesion in Latino communities. Salud America!’s core members led 275 health policy changes in a year, according to a recent evaluation. Dr. Ramirez is a member of the board of directors for the CDC Foundation and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. She has been recognized by the Society of Behavioral Medicine, Oprah Winfrey, the Obama White House, Susan G. Komen, and more. Dr. Ramirez is a native of Laredo, Texas.

Bachelor of Arts, Master of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy

Tejano star, international recording artist and philanthropist Dr. Patsy Torres is a three-time graduate of the University of the Incarnate Word and a driving force in the entertainment industry as well as a youth advocate and an ambassador of cultural awareness and appreciation. Torres is a strong advocate for “Stay in School” partnerships, anti-drug campaigns, and student issues. She donates her time to countless non-profit organizations, schools and community groups, serving as an honorary board member for the Cancer Society, Latin Girl Scouts of America and San Antonio College. She also served the American Red Cross as chairperson for the first Hispanic Committee of San Antonio. While encouraging school students across the nation to stay in school through her "Positive Force Tour" (PFT INC) musical programs, Torres was inspired to go back to school and earn her PhD in Education and Organizational Leadership from UIW. She emphasizes the power of faith, self-esteem, the importance of family support and the value of higher education. Torres is an “edutainer” who blends her scholarly knowledge with her unique musical talents to offer a one-of-a-kind program that mixes her dialogue with inspiring and uplifting songs.

Torres has toured all over the world including Japan, Korea, Philippines, Okinawa, Guam, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Mexico and China. She is the first female Tejano artist to have her music scored for an orchestra and perform with symphonies. As the star performer at Fiesta Texas for 10 years, Torres presented Tejano music and the Latin culture to millions of visitors. Her latest CD, “Mi Inspiración,” My Inspiration, is destined to be her best album yet. Torres has won numerous awards for her music and community work including the LULAC National Presidential Citation, Texas War on Drugs Leadership Award, National Tejano Conference Community Award, TAMACC 2014 Women of Distinction Award and was inducted into both the S.A. Women’s Hall of Fame and the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame.

Torres is also an associate with ASI Professionals, a new organization of seasoned practitioners in the fields of organizational and leadership development, training, organizational learning, education, and psychological services. She is an active UIW alumna serving as the headliner for the annual Light the Way celebration and has represented UIW internationally. Her touring, recording, performing, speaking engagements, community work and business, indicate there is no slowing down for Dr. Patsy Torres as she continues to take her music and the human spirit to new heights.
